DeaFined - Canada's New Deaf Restaurant

Deaf News: Deafined Breaks Down Barriers - Vancouver’s First ‘Deaf Restaurant’ Teaches Diners To Order in American Sign Language.

VANCOUVER, CANADA - A new Vancouver restaurant is encouraging diners to order with their hands - DeaFined, opening May 7 on West 4th Avenue near Vine Street in Kitsilano, is staffed entirely by Deaf and Hard of Hearing servers. Among the first of its kind in Canada, the Eastern Mediterranean restaurant asks customers to order food and drinks using American Sign Language.

For those who don’t know how to sign, there’s no need to fret.

“There’s a cheat sheet on the table with the menu,” said owner Moe Alameddine. “The server comes up to take the order, and the fun part starts there.”

In the mood for steak? Grab the fleshy part of your left hand with the index finger and thumb of your right hand, and wiggle a bit as if getting a good grip on the meat. How about salad? Use both hands and picture yourself tossing some greens.

When customers arrive at the DeaFined, a hearing host or hostess greets them and acts as an interpreter while they introduce the server.

Alameddine came up with the idea after starting his popular blind-dining restaurant O.Noir in Montreal and Toronto and Dark Table in Vancouver, where guests dine in complete darkness while they are served by visually impaired staff. The concept aims to give customers a taste, albeit briefly, of what it’s like to be blind.

Although the business helped provide jobs for Blind people, Alameddine said he realized a need for employment opportunities to benefit the Deaf community.

Only two other North American establishments - Signs Restaurant in Toronto, which hires mostly Deaf servers, and Mozzeria, a pizza restaurant in San Francisco, which has a Deaf owner and staff have a focus on hiring Deaf staff... Forbes: Changing Technologies For The Deaf

Deaf News: Forbes.com - 4 Game-Changing Technologies For The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are more than 360 million people worldwide with a disabling hearing loss, including 32 million children and one-third of people over 65 years of age. Hearing loss may result from genetic causes, complications at birth, certain infectious diseases, chronic ear infections, the use of particular drugs, exposure to excessive noise and aging.

One of the main impacts of hearing loss is on the individual’s ability to communicate with others, since spoken language development is often delayed in children with deafness. Limited access to services and exclusion from communication can have a significant impact on everyday life, causing feelings of loneliness, isolation and frustration, particularly among older people with hearing loss.

Recent advances in technology have the potential to improve the quality of life for those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Here’s a look at four products in this space that caught our attention.

MotionSavvy UNI: MotionSavvy, founded by a team of students from Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, announced “the world’s first two-way communication software for the Deaf.” UNI translates American Sign Language (ASL) into speech, and speech into text. It utilizes a special camera to track the location of both hands and all ten fingers. Graphic representations of the hands provide live feedback to make sure gestures are being captured correctly. The software’s dictionary can be expanded with customized signs added by the user. There’s also an option to upload those signs to the Internet, to share with others. The more an individual uses the system, the more accurate and tailored it becomes. To facilitate the Hearing-to-Deaf half of the communication, the package also includes Dragon Nuance Pro, one of the leading pieces of voice recognition software. Interested customers will have to wait for MotionSavvy UNI, but not long.

The company is planning to release it in September 2015. The video below gives a high level overview of the concept... Read Full Story with Videos: forbes.com/sites/robertszczerba/2015/04/21/4-game-changing-technologies-for-the-deaf-and-hard-of-hearing/

Sign Language Telephone - Documentary Film

VIDEO [CC] - 1979 Bell Labs project for the Deaf to communicate over telephone lines using American Sign Language.

This 1979 film examines a Bell Laboratory research project conducted by Kenneth Knowlton and Vivien Tartter. The team devised a way of using 27 points of light placed on an individual’s hands and face to allow the hearing impaired to use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate remotely. The goal was to find a way to take images of the points of light at each end of a conversation so the images “could be coded to the capacity of one telephone line.” Thus ASL, the primary language for most Deaf people, could be used to conduct conversations over standard telephone lines, without requiring any greater capacity than a regular phone call.

Turn On "CC"
Knowlton was a prominent figure at Bell Labs for many years and is well represented in other videos on the AT&T Archive Channel. At the time this film was made Tartter was a linguist at Rutgers University and continues today as a professor at City College in New York.

In 1981, two years after this video, Tartter and Knowlton published a paper in the scientific journal Nature detailing their work and findings at Bell Labs. The article, “Perception of Sign-Language from an Array of 27 Moving Spots.” details the methods and results of the project, including a transcript of a sign language conversation conducted via television using their method. The paper concludes that the “demonstration suggests the possibility of developing a sign language telephone.” A New York Times article about the published piece soon followed and the subject drew attention in newspapers across the country.

While the system the team conceived was never developed into a final, usable technology, it is a fascinating step in the long procession of efforts to find ways for the Deaf to use the telephone for communicating, as in 2009 when AT&T received the TDI James C. Masters Promotion Award “for providing innovative products and services that address the needs of people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.“

The Truth About Illinois School For The Deaf

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO [CC] - Under Fire: ASL and Cued Speech at the Illinois School for the Deaf.

JACKSONVILLE, IL - A few months ago, Michele Westfall tagged me and a few other people about the Illinois School for the Deaf's website on "Cued Speech Myths." What I saw there was heartbreaking. This is my response to the situation, sharing observations on their video series. Please support the Illinois Deaf Community's efforts to improve conditions at the school.

An Illinois Deaf Community member has stated that the superintendent is leaving in June 2015 and the pro-Cued Speech principal, Angela Kuhn, is a candidate for the position. The community does not want her to take the job.

Description of Adrean Clark, a Deaf white woman wearing a black and silver ASL Bat t-shirt appears against a dark blue background. Her narrative is interspersed with footage from the Illinois School for the Deaf's video series featuring the superintendent and classroom situations.

Summary: The Illinois School for the Deaf released a series of videos intended to dispel doubts about their "bilingual" program. I was heartbroken by what I saw in the footage and would like to show you what I noticed.

- The school's mission is to provide a bilingual ASL - English environment. The actual practice is far from bilingual. The example footage shown takes place during an English composition class. The teacher asks (with Cued Speech) what "to conclude" means. Two students respond - one with ASL/fingerspelling and another by oral English only. The teacher winks at the speaking students. This is common to oral environments that try to "share space" with ASL. Speaking English tends to come first. The student that spoke got special treatment while not signing at all.

- The superintendent claims that the thousands of words in science and social studies have no ASL equivalent, therefore must be fingerspelled. That is a false claim, since ASL has built-in systems for developing new words. The choice to depend on fingerspelling actually robs students of full access to ASL - as an example a video from the ASL THAT! group is posted. In the video Joseph Wheeler differentiates between deer, moose, and elk by following ASL handshapes and structures. The result is a rich natural sciences education that all Deaf students should have access to.

- The superintendent states that Cued Speech provides an alternative for long-term retention of English information that doesn't involve English print alone. That statement shows that speaking is considered superior at the Illinois School for the Deaf.

- In a mathematics classroom, the teacher interrupts teaching to show students how to speak the word "proper." An assistant is called in to display proper mouthing and cueing for the students. When she tries to fingerspell the word, she gets a slap on the hand. It is disconcerting that so much time was spent on that one word - and on top of that, even daring to use English fingerspelling was considered "bad." That is not an ASL-English bilingual environment at all!

The Illinois School for the Deaf is an oral program that uses manually-coded English as the primary mode of instruction. It is not a bilingual program. Footage Sources: Myth 1, 2, and 5 at http://illinoisdeaf.org/FactOrMythASL.html

Miracle on 34th Street Deaf Girl & Santa Scene

VIDEO: High-Definition quality video of a little Deaf girl (Sami) and Santa (Richard Attenborough) signing in ASL "Miracle On 34th Street" scene.

Miracle On 34th Street (1994) - In the scene, a young Deaf girl is brought to sit on the lap of Kriss Kringle at the fictional Cole's department store. Kringle (Richard Attenborough), who hasn't been told of the child's disability, asks her what she would like for Christmas.

After her mother informs him that her child is Deaf and that all she wanted was to sit on Santa's lap, Kringle summons his seasonal powers and begins a sign-language (ASL) conversation.

The stoic girl is transformed on camera with a delighted, surprised smile, signing back her answers, much to the tearful surprise of her mother and more than a few audience members.

As it happens, there is something even more touching about the scene: It is acted by 5-year-old Sami Krieger, the second of three Deaf children born to Jay and Linda Krieger, both of whom are also Deaf.

In the living room of their modest duplex in Hanover Park, a middle-class suburb of Chicago, Sami fidgets in her father's lap, grappling with a temporary case of acute shyness, while her sisters Amanda, 6, and Wanda, 1, look on.

Jay Krieger, with the help of a sign-language interpreter, says of making the film, "The experience was wonderful, really great. The (John) Hughes (production) people treated Sami like royalty, giving her a trailer with a star that had her name on it, which made her feel special," he says.

"My wife had mixed feelings about it, and so did I at first, but if she decides to do something like this again, I think that would be fine with us."

Sami, all warmed up for her interview, signs: "It was really fun being in the movie. Being with Santa and seeing all those toys was the best part," though it was "hard," she says, to pretend it was Christmas in the middle of a sweltering Chicago summer.

"I wish I could have pretended it was Easter, because that's my favorite holiday," she says.

In the original, it is a Dutch war orphan who pays a magical visit to Santa, who instinctively knows her native language and sings to her in Dutch. Hughes rewrote the script, substituting a hearing-impaired child.

"When I read the scene with the Deaf girl," says Mayfield in a phone interview, "that represented the reason why this movie could be remade in relation to a more modern view of the world. And I think this had to be an honest moment iit would only work with a real Deaf girl, who probably never sat on Santa's lap... Interpretive Sign Languages Mashup 'F**k You'

VIDEO: 'Fuck You' by Cee Lo. - Interpretive Sign Languages Mashup - One Song, Many Interpretations!

A variety people giving their personal interpretive performances are sign language interpretations of the song "Fuck You" by Cee Lo.

This is "interpretive" so the hand signs don't match up between people but that also makes it interesting. Some are students and so might make a few mistakes but that doesn't really matter this video for purposes.

People who understand American Sign Language as to whether this video makes sense or if it is very confusing to follow... Put the videos together that they were all using different hand gestures. It'd find that confusing but then again there is something noteworthy about each signing the song in their own, personal, interpretive, fashion. Awesome isn't it?

Deaf and Hearing News - Deaf Family

VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Short film: How does Deaf and Hearing Network impact a Deaf family? #NewsForEveryone.

DHN is a place where everyone can get the news in the language that suits them best, whether they are Deaf or Hearing. This is the first of five installments to show you that DHN is the #NewsForEveryone. How does DHN benefit you? Tell us in the comments below or on social media.

DHN is a news agency out of Phoenix, Arizona. We incorporate American Sign Language, spoken English and captions into each broadcast. There are 48 million Deaf or Hard of Hearing people in America and the majority of them are born into hearing families. Very few of those families will learn sign language - American Sign Language, ASL. This gives the entire family access to news.

Videographer: David Banen

Editor: Peyton Gallovich

Music: Jeff Southwick - http://www.singlemanstudios.com/

Actors: Abrams-Gay Family

This is the first news show to involve all three forms of communication and give information relevant to everyone whether they are involved in the Deaf community or not. What most people fail to realize is that English and ASL are two completely different languages with their own grammatical structures. Plus, English is a second language for most deaf people and the lag and inaccuracy in live captioning can make daily news a daunting task.

DHN hopes to grow into a national, daily broadcast with news segments and other network programs. We currently air on local channels and online.

Because they could not seem to understand some of the discussions we had, they accused us of belittling them. It amounted to "dumbing down of a society".

Critical and independent thinkers were not welcome there. Because of that Barry didn't belong there. Regardless of the difference, the owner of DeafVideo.TV and Barry met and reached a peaceful closure with hope that it'll finally give everybody the closure they seek.

Bottom the line, Barry claimed "closure" which means he is apparently "banned" according to the owner responses has reacted to a video showing DeafVideo.TV's comments. Try harder than that next time, Barry.
