Deaf Women United - Non-Profit Organization

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf Women United, and organization that is of, for and by Deaf women is at the forefront of these changing times.

Deaf Women United (DWU) are an organization that focuses on advocacy, education and outreach. Deaf communities are scattered throughout the country, which makes networking critically important for exchanging of information, empowerment and enhancement in the quality of lives for all Deaf women.

Deaf Women United is committed to continuing a community of support of Deaf women from all walks of life. You can play a significant role in assuring the success of our mission to promote the lives of Deaf women through empowerment, enrichment, and networking.

Founded in 1985, Deaf Women United has provided in the last few decades one of the most significant changes in our country’s perception of Deaf women. Women in the general society as well as in Deaf communities have assumed important responsibilities and are key people in making things better. Even so, historically, successful Deaf women did not make front-page headlines, nor were they been recognized in their lines of work.

That is where Deaf Women United has made a difference. The impact of the formed DWU was immediate, and its efforts long overdue. Today, DWU’s numbers are more than half a thousand strong and it is the leader in the grassroots Deaf women’s movement. DWU members are your neighbors and friends. They’re Deaf women active in your local communities.

Creating Deaf Counternarratives With Commentary

VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Deaf Awareness: Seizing Academic Power: Creating Deaf Counternarratives with Commentary.

Raychelle is honored by this opportunity to distribute this captioned video to a large audience through ASLized! platform - thanks ASLized! Not only that, thanks also go to ASLChoice for the use of their studio and equipment in filming this production.

History: The older sections of this video (Raychelle with medium-length hair) was filmed during Fall 2012 and posted in the evening of January 4, 2015. Summer and I were notified of some errors, and we took the video down in the morning of January 6, 2015. An addendum including an apology and discussion of Raychelle’s errors was added to the video (Raychelle with longer hair), along with some edits (removed clips) and uploaded on January 10, 2015. The final, stand-alone version of Seizing Academic Power: Creating Deaf Counternarratives will be posted early February.

Turn "Closed Captioned" On.

Raychelle is humbly aware no work is perfect, and that even though she tries to make sure the information is accurate; she is aware elusive errors and regression do lurk in her work. Raychelle asks for the opportunity to continue to correct/improve her work, including any accessibility issues (e.g. image/text descriptions, transcripts and more). Raychelle welcomes all suggestions and ideas on improving her work, including minimizing and removing any promotion of privileges for white, sighted, abled, educated & literate deaf-signing persons...Read more: http://youtu.be/C3Ae20lXJ1I

Deaf In Prison - Full Documentary Film

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO [ASL/CC] - HEARD created the ‘Deaf In Prison’ to raise awareness about abuse of discrimination against Deaf prisoners.

With many people in prisons that are not heard, there is an organization called "Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf" (HEARD) that strives to fight for the rights of Deaf prisoners. While prisoners have it hard, Deaf prisoners are often in the worst place possible at the wrong time.

The #DeafInPrison Campaign, which officially launches on June 27th, aims to start a national conversation about these concerns and to compel corrective and preventive action.

We are asking that you watch "Deaf In Prison," then share your reactions, your story, or any information you have on social media using #DeafInPrison. This link will be available for 48 hours beginning at 12:00 a.m. (EST), Friday, June 27.

#DeafInPrison Campaign Trailer.

More than ten organizations across the nation will host viewings and more hundreds of people will watch the film individually. Help us start a national dialogue about Deaf and Disabled prisoners after you watch this powerful documentary.

This Al Jazeera America exclusive investigation, which originally aired in December 2013, features interviews from HEARD board members Pat Bliss & Talila "TL" Lewis; Deaf prisoners from HEARD's Deaf & Deaf-Blind Prisoner Database, the only national database of Deaf prisoners; Felix Garcia, HEARD's longest-serving Deaf wrongfully convicted prisoner; and family members of Deaf prisoners.

HEARD worked with Al Jazeera America producers for more than two years on this project & we are humbled and grateful for their support of our efforts.

Please help amplify the Deaf Access to Justice Movement by sharing what you learn and asking others to watch.
