Deaf Women United - Non-Profit Organization

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf Women United, and organization that is of, for and by Deaf women is at the forefront of these changing times.

Deaf Women United (DWU) are an organization that focuses on advocacy, education and outreach. Deaf communities are scattered throughout the country, which makes networking critically important for exchanging of information, empowerment and enhancement in the quality of lives for all Deaf women.

Deaf Women United is committed to continuing a community of support of Deaf women from all walks of life. You can play a significant role in assuring the success of our mission to promote the lives of Deaf women through empowerment, enrichment, and networking.

Founded in 1985, Deaf Women United has provided in the last few decades one of the most significant changes in our country’s perception of Deaf women. Women in the general society as well as in Deaf communities have assumed important responsibilities and are key people in making things better. Even so, historically, successful Deaf women did not make front-page headlines, nor were they been recognized in their lines of work.

That is where Deaf Women United has made a difference. The impact of the formed DWU was immediate, and its efforts long overdue. Today, DWU’s numbers are more than half a thousand strong and it is the leader in the grassroots Deaf women’s movement. DWU members are your neighbors and friends. They’re Deaf women active in your local communities.

Deaf Canadian Curling Champion Dead

Deaf Manitoba curler, Clifford Beaulieu, 42, sent to hospital after being discovered outside by Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

CBC WINNIPEG - The family of a Manitoba man who died after spending the night outdoors is devastated and still has questions about what led him into the cold.

Clifford Beaulieu, 42, was spending time with some friends at a home in the Rural Municipality of St. Francis Xavier, Manitoba. Feb. 4. He left and never returned.

"I know he froze from the elements and that, but why let him leave the house like that, and not, you know, check on him, see where he went?" said Martin Beaulieu, Clifford's brother.

Beaulieu was sent to hospital after being found outdoors by police the next day. He died in hospital.

Martin said the group had been drinking and that Clifford left the house after an argument broke out.

"They told me that he was intoxicated when he left the house, but he was also angry at them and when he left, he just, like, he walked away angry," said Martin. "Still, no matter what, you don't let a person walk out in the cold like that."

Beaulieu was part of a Canada’s National Deaf Curling team. The team will compete in the 2015 Winter Deaflympics in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia - March 28 to April 5, 2015.

Miracle on 34th Street Deaf Girl & Santa Scene

VIDEO: High-Definition quality video of a little Deaf girl (Sami) and Santa (Richard Attenborough) signing in ASL "Miracle On 34th Street" scene.

Miracle On 34th Street (1994) - In the scene, a young Deaf girl is brought to sit on the lap of Kriss Kringle at the fictional Cole's department store. Kringle (Richard Attenborough), who hasn't been told of the child's disability, asks her what she would like for Christmas.

After her mother informs him that her child is Deaf and that all she wanted was to sit on Santa's lap, Kringle summons his seasonal powers and begins a sign-language (ASL) conversation.

The stoic girl is transformed on camera with a delighted, surprised smile, signing back her answers, much to the tearful surprise of her mother and more than a few audience members.

As it happens, there is something even more touching about the scene: It is acted by 5-year-old Sami Krieger, the second of three Deaf children born to Jay and Linda Krieger, both of whom are also Deaf.

In the living room of their modest duplex in Hanover Park, a middle-class suburb of Chicago, Sami fidgets in her father's lap, grappling with a temporary case of acute shyness, while her sisters Amanda, 6, and Wanda, 1, look on.

Jay Krieger, with the help of a sign-language interpreter, says of making the film, "The experience was wonderful, really great. The (John) Hughes (production) people treated Sami like royalty, giving her a trailer with a star that had her name on it, which made her feel special," he says.

"My wife had mixed feelings about it, and so did I at first, but if she decides to do something like this again, I think that would be fine with us."

Sami, all warmed up for her interview, signs: "It was really fun being in the movie. Being with Santa and seeing all those toys was the best part," though it was "hard," she says, to pretend it was Christmas in the middle of a sweltering Chicago summer.

"I wish I could have pretended it was Easter, because that's my favorite holiday," she says.

In the original, it is a Dutch war orphan who pays a magical visit to Santa, who instinctively knows her native language and sings to her in Dutch. Hughes rewrote the script, substituting a hearing-impaired child.

"When I read the scene with the Deaf girl," says Mayfield in a phone interview, "that represented the reason why this movie could be remade in relation to a more modern view of the world. And I think this had to be an honest moment iit would only work with a real Deaf girl, who probably never sat on Santa's lap... Deaf Sprinter Breaking Records

VIDEO: Deaf sprinter Sekou Kanneh, 13, breaks 21-year-old record at Queensland Secondary Schools State Championships.

QUEENSLAND, AU - Couriermail.com: Sekou Kanneh never heard the crack of the starting pistol on his way to breaking a 21-year-old record at the Queensland Secondary Schools State Championships.

In a world first, the 13-year-old Deaf sprinter’s scorching 100m at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre was released by the flash of a hi-tech starting system that frees him to compete against, and beat, able-bodied athletes.

The Indooroopily State High School student’s time of 11.36secs in Thursday’s semi-final shaved .08sec from the previous mark and qualified him for the national championships to be held in Townsville in December.

Just to prove it was no fluke, he repeated the time in the final, helping himself to the Queensland title.

“I was so excited, and proud,” Kanneh said through an interpreter.

While his rivals reacted to the gun, Kanneh responded to a set of lights that rest directly in his eye line near the top of his starting blocks.

Previously, Deaf athletes racing in able-bodied competition would react to a tap on the shoulder from a helper standing behind the blocks.

In Kanneh’s case, he would watch for a twitch from the runner in the adjacent lane, a tactic that increases the risk of a false start.

That old system could cost Deaf sprinters almost three-tenths of a second, potentially the difference between first and last.

Now that the International Association of Athletics Federations has made the lights legal in able-bodied competition, runners like Kanneh can compete on an even playing field and legitimately claim records. ... Rabia Sorda - The Making of ‘DEAF’

VIDEO: Signed - Rabia Sorda - The Making of ‘DEAF’. A "Making Of" and "Behind the Scenes" look at the production of Rabia Sorda's latest video clip "Deaf", directed by Chris Creepy. From the album "Hotel Suicide"

On their third long player, Rabia Sorda lash out with a refreshingly raw fusion of Electro, Industrial, Punk and Wave. “Hotel Suicide” is released as a deluxe 2CD and breaks loose from the speakers like a thunderstorm!

Rabia Sorda is anger set to music. On his newest outing “Hotel Suicide”, Hocico-front man Erk Aicrag has mastered the nigh impossible feat of capturing the brute force and sincerity of his live shows on record.

The songs go right for the emotional center like a fist in your face and then rumble through your body like a runaway freight train, while effectively mingling the dark heavy atmosphere of Post Punk with the direct and aggressive approach of Hardcore and Punk on a cocktail of electronics, harsh drums, wild buzz-saw guitars and straightforwardly catchy melodies.

Rabia Sorda - Deaf (Official Video Clip)

“Hotel Suicide” is 100% gut feeling that is unleashed in form of the most explosive sonic bastard of Industrial, Post Punk and Electroclash this year! As a special bonus, the first pressing of the album will contain the exclusive bonus disc “Room 13” which contains two more unreleased songs, remixes by OST+FRONT, Forgotten Sunrise and many more, plus six energetic live tracks, recorded in Leipzig at the end of 2012.
