Deaf Pilot Gets License In Ohio

Exclusive: Deaf woman pilot gets license that not going to stop her from taking to the sky.

LANCASTER, OH - Learning to fly is no easy feat, but Lancaster native Jenny Hurst was not going to let being Deaf stop her from taking to the sky.

From a young age, Hurst dreamed of being a pilot like her grandfather, a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. She has always been drawn to flying, she said, and before 9/11, one of her favorite things to do was to watch planes take off from Port Columbus International Airport. In her younger years, she went as far as telling boyfriends plane-watching was her preferred way to spend a date.

Aware of that desire, Hurst’s husband of 17 years, Adam, looked into flight lessons at Sundowner Aviation at the Fairfield County Airport for his wife, who has been Deaf since the age of 2. Officials there agreed to take her on, and one year later, after fitting in two to three hours of flight instruction per week, Hurst got her pilot license. She took her first solo flight July 18.

On Sunday, Hurst took her family up in the plane for the first time, although the family of six could not all fit in one flight. Hurst hopes to become registered in instrument flight rules so she can be allowed to fly larger planes that will fit her entire family.

Another use for the pilot license may be flying materials from suppliers to Hammock Gear, the backpacking outfitter the Hursts own in Lancaster. While Hurst would love to be a pilot for hire, she said she is still exploring her limits as a Deaf pilot and her abilities with communication... LOS ANGELES - Television producer Jill Blackstone was released from custody Wednesday after her arrest in connection to the death of her Deaf, partially blind sister, authorities said.

Walking in NYC as a Deaf Woman

VIRAL VIDEO [CC] - Ten hours of silent walking in Manhattan to pretend as a Deaf woman.

NEW YORK CITY - The silent woman receives rape threats after recording 10 hours of harassment in New York. Actor Shoshana B Roberts recorded all the catcalls and remarks she got from passersby as she walked for 10 hours through New York.

An actor who recorded 10 hours of catcalls and remarks from passersby in New York City has received rape threats in response to a video detailing the harassment, the advocacy group that commissioned the video said on Tuesday.

In a two-minute video, actor Shoshana B Roberts was told to smile, told, “Somebody is acknowledging you for being beautiful, you should say thank you,” and comments were made about her clothes and appearance.

At one point in the video, which has been viewed nearly 10m times in fewer than 24 hours, a man walked alongside her silently for five minutes.

Another followed her, while offering to give her his number.

“The rape threats indicate that we are hitting a nerve,” Hollaback director Emily May told Newsday. “We want to do more than just hit a nerve though, we want New Yorkers to realize – once and for all – that street harassment isn’t OK, and that as a city we refuse to tolerate it.”

Hollaback!, an international group that has been fighting street harassment since 2005, said people were reporting threats to YouTube, where the video is hosted, and that the website was taking them down.

There were more than 100 instances of verbal street harassment recorded during the 10 hours. “This doesn’t include the countless winks, whistles, etc,” the video says. SOURCE

New Hampshire Hospital Settles With Deaf Woman

VIDEO: New Hampshire hospital settles with Deaf woman. Monadnock Community Hospital of Peterborough has agreed to a settlement over allegations that it failed to provide appropriate aid and services under the American Disabilities Act.

PETERBOROUGH - The U.S. Department of Justice announced today that Monadnock Community Hospital has agreed to a $5,000 settlement with a Deaf woman who received medical care at the hospital in 2010, according to a statement from justice department officials.

The woman, Amy Dauphinais, communicates primarily through sign language, and alleges hospital officials failed to provide her with auxiliary aids during her stay there, which resulted in her being unable to communicate with hospital personnel, and instead relied on her minor daughter to interpret for her, according to the statement.

Although the hospital agreed to pay Dauphinais $5,000, it did so without admitting liability in the incident, justice department officials said.

In a statement, hospital officials said there was "a strong difference of opinion on the facts of the patient visit that was the basis of the claim," and that "there was never any question of any adverse effect on the quality of care provided to any patient and MCH cooperated throughout the case. ...READ MORE: http://www.sentinelsource.com/news/local/local-hospital-settles-with-deaf-woman/article_96c3aaa8-af8f-5ddc-91eb-15a86a64508c.html

Deaf Woman Suing Former Employer For No Terps

Deaf woman suing former employer for not providing sign language interpreter. Discrimination suit filed.

ROSEVILLE - A local nonprofit dedicated to helping people with special needs is being sued for allegedly discriminating against a former employee with disabilities.

The lawsuit says Placer ARC violated federal law when it failed to provide reasonable accommodations to a Deaf employee.

Homeyra Kazerounian is Deaf and uses sign language to communicate. And according to a lawsuit, her supervisors failed to provide an interpreter for her during daily staff meetings and forced her to speak only in English.

“Literally she doesn’t speak anything. She uses American Sign Language,” said David Offen-Brown, Kazerounian’s attorney.

Kazarounian started working at Placer ARC’s Auburn office in 2005 was always given an interpreter during mandatory staff meetings, according to the federal lawsuit. But when she transferred to Roseville three years later, her attorneys says that all changed.

“They required her to communicate by writing notes,” said Offen-Brown.

According to a lawsuit filed by an attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Kazerounian’s consistent requests for an interpreter went unfulfilled.

“This didn’t allow her to participate in the meetings, to ask questions, to make statements, to participate in discussions,” said Offen-Brown.

Placer ARC Executive Director Barbara Guenther wouldn’t go on camera, but released this statement: ...Read more: http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2013/03/26/deaf-woman-suing-former-employer-for-not-providing-sign-language-interpreter/

VIDEO: Providence woman's body found in drum in New York City.

NEW YORK CITY - A young woman from Providence was the victim of a gruesome murder in New York City.

The body of 19-year-old Francis Alfonso Pellerano was found in a 55-gallon drum inside a Harlem apartment over the weekend.

"I always knew that something was going to happen to her. I wasn't sleeping at night," the victim's father, Manuel Alfonso, told NBC 10 News through a translator.

Pellerano was Deaf and could not speak. She was a student at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf on and off for about five years, until she left the school late last year.

Family members said she went to New York with a young man she met on Facebook. He is also Deaf.

Media outlets in New York reported that Pellerano may have been planning to leave the boyfriend. Pellerano's body was found in the barrel by the boyfriend's grandmother, who smelled a foul odor.

There have been no arrests. The boyfriend is under psychiatric care in a New York hospital.

"I want justice because I know he's not crazy. He cleaned all the blood after he killed her," Alfonso said.

The Rhode Island School for the Deaf is planning a memorial for Pellerano. SOURCE
