Couple's Sign Language Car Singalong Goes Viral

Video of an American Sign Language interpreter, and fiancé, signing interpretations of popular songs becomes an online hit.

The car signalong video of Tina Cleveland, an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, and her fiancé, Paul Sirimarco, have a highly entertaining road trip tradition.

While most families resign themselves to playing "I Spy," "21 Questions," and, in moments of sheer desperation, "Slug Bug," Tina and Paul are having a blast "singing" along to songs in ASL.

A video of the couple signing along to "You're The One That I Want" was uploaded to YouTube Thursday and features them dancing along as the "Grease" soundtrack pipes into the background.

"Hey everyone! I am an ASL interpreter and Paul is an amazing fiancé who learns signs so we can do song interpretations together."

In a post on Facebook, Cleveland declared, "Our road trips are anything but normal."

"Being able to share music through sign language (and dance) is honestly what my little heart lives for," she added in another post. "Also, hearing people saying they want to learn ASL is sooooo awesome! Do it!!!" Source

Deaf Driver Hit and Run Zombie Walk

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO - Deaf man arrested after running over a woman at comic-con in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, CA - Raw video of the vehicle running over a 64-year woman has emerged, showing the extent of injuries, including exposed flesh, muscle tissue and bone.

While there were initial claims that the motorist heard threats in other online footage, the driver of the vehicle is allegedly Deaf. The man claims he waited for the mass of people to pass, but they attacked his car, breaking his windshield and frightening his young children, he claims.

The Deaf man put his foot down and drove off to escape, but hit a nearby woman who was not participating in the walk. While police were at the head of the parade, no other police were present at any intersections.

The San Diego Zombie Walk was a non-sanctioned event of Comic Con 2014. The organizers of the Zombie Walk required all participants to obey traffic laws, including obeying traffic signals and laws around blocking vehicles which may have right of way.

The woman was seriously injured, and taken to a local hospital. Police have subsequently reported that the Deaf driver is not likely to face any charges. Source

JOHANNESBURG - A South African sign language interpreter accused of gesturing gibberish during the Nelson Mandela memorial on Tuesday has spoken out.

Thamsanqa Jantjie said he suffers from schizophrenia which affected him during the service.

The 34-year-old told Johannesburg’s Star newspaper he started hearing voices and hallucinating while on stage.

Jantjie explained how the condition has affected him: “I see angels come to the stadium. Sometimes I will react violently on that place. Sometimes I will see things chasing me. You know, I was in a very very difficult position,” he said.

Interpreter refuses to sign for CNN. Thamsanqa Jantjie, the sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial, defends his "translation" at the event.

“Please forgive me, but what I was doing, I was doing what I believe is my calling, I was doing what I believe makes a difference to the country,” Jantjie continued.

After the memorial, South Africa’s leading Deaf association denounced Jantjie as a “fake.”

The South African government has admitted he was not a professional interpreter.

This, along with his admissions of past violence and his state of mental health at the memorial service, has promoted awkward questions about security. ... Read more: http://www.euronews.com/2013/12/12/mandela-memorial-fake-sign-language-interpreter-defends-himself

Deaf Couple Killed in Hit-and-Run by Semi Truck

VIDEO: Deaf couple killed in hit-and-run by semi truck in florida. Camera image of a truck believed to be identified in a fatal hit and run crash.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - WPTV: The Florida Highway Patrol has identified a person of interest in the fatal hit-and-run crash that left two young people dead Monday evening on Florida’s Turnpike near mile marker 166 in Fort Pierce.

Robert Bates, a 68-year-old resident of Sanford, Florida, was identified as a person of interest in the accident that killed 19-year-old Mariah A. King and 24-year-old Vincent T. Mathews as they attempted to change a tire on their PT Cruiser around 8 p.m., according to Sgt. Mark Wysocky, spokesman for FHP.

The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier Tuesday morning FHP investigators traveled to Orlando to question a suspect in the fatal hit-and-run wreck. They told WPTV that they had spoken with the suspect and had recovered the rig.

However, Tuesday evening FHP said in a media release that investigators did not find the person of interest at home and had not recovered the 2006 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer believed to have been involved in the fatal accident. Investigators did speak with representatives of Mercer Transport of Louisville, Ky,, the registered owner of the semi, regarding the investigation and said company officials were cooperating.

WPTV reached out to family members of both victims but they declined to comment. However, they said they were devastated. One family member did confirm the two were visiting friends further south and were on their way back home to Lakeland. FHP investigators called the site tragic.

"Anytime you're attempting to change your tire and a car veered off the road and hit the people…it's going to be a tragic site," said Sgt. Wysocky. Both victims are former students of the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. ... Read more Robert Bates: Person of interest identified in fatal crash that killed a Central Florida couple

Deaf College Student Suspect: Dylan Andrew Quick (VIDEO)

Watch Video: (Captioned) - A Deaf student suspect in Texas college stabbings had dreams of success, bloodshed, some say.

Abcnews.go.com: A Deaf college student accused of going on a stabbing spree at a Texas campus attacked his victims with such force that "pieces of blade" were found in at least one of his 14 alleged victims, according to police.

Dylan Andrew Quick, 20, allegedly used a razor utility knife to stab and cut fellow students at Lone Star College Tuesday, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

"There were pieces of blade in at least one victim, broken blade pieces in the area where the cutting occurred, and the handle to a razor-type knife (X-Acto-style) was found in a backpack that Quick was carrying when he was arrested," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Quick told police he has "had fantasies of stabbing people to death" since he was 8 years old. He also indicated he had been planning the attack for "some time."

Quick has been "matter-of-fact" with investigators, Sheriff Adrian Garcia said at a news conference today. ...READ MORE: http://abcnews.go.com/US/texas-college-stabbing-suspect-left-pieces-blade-victim/story?id=18922338#.UWZBezdbySp

A Deaf college student suspect in Texas college stabbings had dreams of success, bloodshed, some say.

CNN - Dylan Andrew Quick overcame a childhood disability and had big plans for the future. But on Tuesday, the 20-year-old student went on a stabbing spree on his Texas college campus, authorities said.

By the time campus police took him into custody, 14 people had been injured at Lone Star College. It's unclear how many of the injured were stabbed and how many suffered other injuries. The campus shut down Tuesday, but will reopen Wednesday.

Quick landed in jail. For now, his plans for the future may be in jeopardy.

Overcoming obstacles: Quick was born Deaf and received a cochlear implant at age 7, CNN affiliate KPRC reported. An article on how he overcame challenges early in life appeared on a Lone Star student blog the first week of April. The implant gave him the ability to hear, but he had to play catch-up to learn how to speak English. His mother homeschooled him and got him involved in Lone Star's library programs, when he was a teen, according to KPRC.

Quick became a voracious reader and developed a close connection with the school northwest of Houston, where he later became a student, the affiliate said. He was planning to finish his associate's degree there and transfer to the University of Houston to study accounting. The young man dreamed of starting a book club. But Quick had also been harboring a darker dream, police said. ...READ MORE: http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/10/justice/texas-college-stabbing/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Wrong Medications Kill Pregnant Deaf Persons

Wrong medications kill pregnant Deaf persons – GNAD Director.

KUMASI - The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has observed that the inability of doctors and nurses to understand and interpret sign language was leading to wrong prescriptions of medicines to Deaf persons.

The GNAD said the phenomenon was leading to many expectant mothers among Deaf persons losing their lives while others were disheartened and disappointed, given the unfair treatment meted out to Deaf persons visiting health centres across the country.

Mr James M. Sambian, Executive Director of the GNAD, made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Monday to explain the challenges death persons encounter when accessing healthcare.

He said lack of sign language interpreters was resulting in inappropriate diagnosis because of communication barrier among Deaf patients and the hearing medical officers and the nurses.

Mr Sambian explained that the situation had resulted in the incidence of incorrect prescriptions consequently leading to preventable deaths.

The Executive Director noted that due to lack of understanding and interpretation of sign language, a medical officer in one of the health centres in the Ashanti Region sometime ago, prescribed wrong medicine to a pregnant Deaf woman which consequently killed her.

To break the communication barrier and getting an intermediary, many Deaf persons in most cases had to bear the entire cost of engaging a private sign language interpreter in order to access quality health. ...Read more: http://vibeghana.com/2013/03/18/wrong-medications-kill-pregnant-deaf-persons-gnad-director

Deaf Woman Hears Son's Voice For First Time

VIDEO: The incredible footage, shows the profoundly Deaf woman, Amy tries out her new cochlear implant an electronic device surgically implanted in the ear to provide a sense of sound.

A 26-year-old mother, who was born Deaf, was able to hear her son’s voice for the first time with a cochlear implant. Amy was sitting in her doctor’s office with her family as she tried out the implant, an electronic device surgically implanted in the ear.

She started crying instantly after hearing her six-year-old son Blake speak to her for the first time. “Hi mom,” Blake said, as the room erupted with laughter. Amy nodded to indicate she heard what he said. “I feel weird,” she said. “It feels so different.”

Though she was completely Deaf, she still received her high school diploma and college degree. She escaped from her silent life with the implant, something she had always dreamed of doing but never thought was possible.

“This is just a start to the road ahead to learn what sound is and where it comes from. It was the most amazing day ever to be a witness to this medical miracle and a true gift from God,” Amy’s aunt Catherine Arnold said.

Though the sound provided by the implant isn’t the same as natural hearing, it allows patients to hear and understand speech and environmental sounds like music. ... Read more http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/video-deaf-woman-hears-sons-voice-first-time
